Steampunk Craze Hits Indonesia: the Steam-Powered Bike
Filed Under: Environmental News on June 25, 2009

This is pretty darn cool, I must say. It’s called teh R-NAN 01 and it’s a steam-powered bicycle capable of going up to 75mph! The idea isn’t new, of course, but it’s the current modern rendition of this steam punk classic.
The bike was built by a guy named Rusnan (I think) and since my Indonesian is not exactly up to par (or existent, to be honest), I can’t make many other comments on the bike’s inner-workings. It takes about fifteen minutes to crank up enough steam power (between your legs, burning in a furnace and boiler) to get the bike under it’s own…er…steam.
The estimate is that this bicycle will fly along at up to 75mph, but so far no top speed attempt has been made. Yet. If these people are crazy enough to build this and ride it around (did I mention it’s a pressurized steam tank boiler between your legs?), they’re loony enough to try to top it out, I’m sure.
Whatever you think of it, the idea is pretty cool and Rusnan and pals are crazy brave to have made it adn be riding it around.
