Experts Predicting Quieter Hurricane Season (#AlGoreFAIL)
Filed Under: Al Gore, Environmental News on August 6, 2009
With one of the calmest seasons so far, experts from Colorado State University who study hurricanes in Florida have changed their predictions for this year. They’ve reduced the number of expected hurricanes to four for the season with two of those being “major” (winds over 111mph).
Studying the El Nino effect, the scientists have modeled the phenomenon and found that it has a 3 to 6 year pattern and think that the signs seen so far show that we are to have one this year. El Nino effects dampen hurricane intensity and recurrence, so the scientists have revised predictions for this year to give a below-average Atlantic basin cyclone season for 2009.
The total named storms for the season ares expected to number at 10 with only four of them becoming hurricanes. That’s down by one on each count, the extra hurricane was to be a “major” event.
