Blog Action Day: An inconvenient question

Filed Under: Green Politics on October 15, 2009

The following 4 and a half minute video is from Irish filmmakers Phelim McAleer and Ann McElhinney who went to New York City to interview celebrities who were on their way into the premier of the new film The Age of Stupid.  That film’s makers made sure to put a lot of publicity into the fact that the movie was “carbon neutral” in its making.

In the film, emphasis is put on the cost of air travel on the environment.  So the plucky Irish crew decided to focus on that, since their intent was to show the hypocrisy behind those who make and attend these “statement” movies.  What ensued was not funny, nor did it catch any stars with red faces at their own obvious hypocrisy.

What ensued was four minutes that encapsulate the way climate debates are held in today’s world.  It’s both telling and worrisome.  Not only did the film’s promoters, the security crew for the premier, etc. set out to literally kick the Irish filmers out of the press’ front line and into the “rabble” on the street (despite their being credentialed press), but then the rabble on the street did their part to ensure that the filmmakers could not continue their work either.

I won’t call out political names, but I’ve seen how censorship and the tyrannical mindset works on both sides of the American political isle.  You’re seeing it here too.  It’s summed up by something I was told once at a political rally when we were confronted by a group of counter-protesters who had organized specifically to “shut us down.”  Their shouts?  “We’re right, so you shut up!”

Thanks to cfact.org for this video.
