Wind powered factories

Ever think about the history of windmills? When most of us think of them, we think of the new, huge towers that generate electricity. There are a lot of them here in Eastern Wyoming, I know that. They’re the very symbol of “green energy” today and are growing quickly in popularity.
If you live in farm country like I do, however, you also know that decades and even centuries-old windmills pepper the landscape. Most aren’t operational or provided small services like pumping water from a well for livestock. They are a signal, however, that windmills aren’t anything new.
On Low-Tech Magazine (a great website), there is an awesome article that discusses, both in words and pictures, the history of industrial windmills. It’s amazing, informative, and definitely worth the time reading.
