Changes to Aarons Environmental Corner

Filed Under: Uncategorized on April 16, 2010

I’m working on some changes to the site.  Anyone who visits daily know that we (yet again) had a couple of days of downtime.  The hosting services I was with (SuperGreenHosting) has been dumped and the site is now on a new host.  Sadly, despite the prerogative of the site, I’ve given up on “green” hosting.  This is host #5 for this website and the previous four “green” hosts have been nothing but problems.  This new host is a company I have other sites with as well and who have proven themselves reliable.

The downer (sort of) is that the template being used for this site’s design is old and outdated and doesn’t jive well with the new setup.  So I’m going to replace it.  That’s in the works now and I’ll have it done this weekend.

Otherwise, we’re all online again, links should be restored, and things should be just fine in every other aspect.  I won’t be posting much until I get the new template in place.

Oh, and one piece of advice for site owners out there: KEEP BACKUPS AND KEEP THEM YOURSELF!  Had I not had a backup from the previous host, I would be still begging them to get my site back online and/or send me the files.  As it is, I do daily database and twice-weekly whole-site backups that I keep myself, off-server.

I do this for all my sites and if you have a website that you care about, you should be doing the same.  The tools are usually built-in with your control panel and/or can be added to your site.  WordPress has WP-DBbackup, which I highly recommend for more than just database backups – it also does great optimization and other tasks.  It’s a free plugin and well worth it.
