I just read Evidence-Based Medicine is Not Exclusive of Alternative Medicine and I must disagree with you. While evidence-based medicine is definitely important, large N, double-blind placebo studies will not work with functional medicine. Functional medicine works with each individual’s biochemistry, which consists of multiple variables, including things like toxic burden, detox capability, etc. which even for that individual may change over time. There are general guidelines and things that may work for a general population but when actually working to heal an individual, this must be based upon the profile of that individual and this can vary from one person to the next. The best approach is to begin a series of case studies and then over time, a pattern will emerge that will provide proof of treatment.
In order to know where to start and what to use, however, you’ll need to know what works in general. Hence, evidence-based medicine. All doctors do what you’re describing (at least, the good ones do). Since even pharmaceuticals and generalized procedures don’t work for everyone either. Evidence-based medicine is based on percentages, just like you’re describing here. A certain percentage will have a positive reaction to a specific treatment. Most medical conditions have multiple treatment options because, as you say, everyone is different. I fail to see how this changes what I said in those articles (which will publish here soon as well).
